Gold Practice in Moelwyns, Snowdonia, 7-9 Aug 2026

Last weekend saw a misty start to this minimum duration remote wild camp, Gold practice expedition for 2 groups of senior cadets from 1368 Sqn. Focus was to give 9 cadets from 1368 Sqn more nav training in wild country plus the more rarer experience of the joys of wild camping. This mountain range is known for its quieter hillwalking and industrial slate heritage. Some stunning scenery with practically no-one else there. Watching sunset going down over panorama of the Yr Wyddfa massif was a highlight, plus the electricity when the whole group came together. 




If improving mountain nav was the goal then Sunday didn't disappoint with an early start in clag and teams navigating themselves back from the wild camp via a route through remnants of industrial slate heritage. Hill fog kept temperatures/sun exposure down, hence we were pretty lucky with weather. Seems odd given the heat wave to see cadets in waterproofs with waterfalls. Wales doesn't disappoint. They successfully navigated their way back to civilisation (KFC, toilets and ice cream).

Last week, the cadets did some drill practice, partly in readiness for parades that are coming up, partly to give new prospective NCOs some experience "at the front" and also to sharpen up Squadron discipline. Drill is a powerful aid to discipline. It develops a sense of corporate pride, alertness, precision and readiness to obey orders instantly. Good drill in aircraft is directly fostered by the habit of drilling smartly on parade. Thus, smartness on parade is not only a sign of good discipline, but a basic factor in raising the standard of performance in duties. Back in the (really) old days, the Air Cadets used to have its own Air Cadet drill manual. Nowadays this is all gone. The RAFAC aligns wholly to the RAF Drill manual called AP818 . Joining the air cadets

We currently have 3 intakes a year aligned to the start of the school terms. This means that our next intake is January 2024 and the likely intake after this would be April 2024. The benefits of the intake system are: You join at the same time as others who are in the same boat. This helps make friends. Avoids repeats of training. Group works progressively through syllabus, building knowledge as they become integrated into the squadron. Easier to deliver training with limited rooms. When we get an expression of interest we will contact parents/guardian(s) to arrange a visit with the potential cadet, so they can see what it is like and have a look around. If there is still interest after this then we would advise when next intake is, and start the forms 2-4 weeks before the date. What are TG Forms and where to get them?

TG Forms is the term we use to refer to Activity-related Parent/Guardian Consent Forms. From a cadet perspective they include: - TG Form 021 : Activity Consent Form – Cadet. - TG Form 023 : Health Declaration Form There is also a TG Form 022: Activity Consent Form - Staff. The best place to find these forms for completion is via the main  https://www.bader.mod.uk/  landing page. Look for the Useful Resources section.  TG Forms are date-specific consents and require doing for each event where requested. Some parents will download the Word document and complete information that does not change once, and then print/sign with event specific details/dates, although when design this it's important to check the emergency contact details are correct for the period. It's not possible to accept these electronically at the moment, hence a wet signature version is expected, even if the rest of the details are typed in.
